The Vision
Why I built this.
When my mother became seriously ill, no one told us what stage we were in or what was coming. She passed away, and within a week I was navigating court filings, creditor notices, and deadlines, while still in shock. This wasn’t only an experience problem, it was an infrastructure and support problem too. I built Afterpath so my children never have to navigate what I did.
The platform spans the full family lifecycle through four components.
Comfort - Eldercare Navigation. Guided support for families navigating care decisions, facility placement, and in-home care coordination.
Protection - Legacy Planning. Proactive tools for wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and advance directives before they are urgently needed.
Transition - Estate Settlement. The core platform. Court filings, asset inventory, creditor management, and beneficiary coordination in one workspace.
Growth - Wealth Intelligence. Ongoing financial insight and coordination for families managing inherited assets and multi-generational wealth.
Building it
I founded Afterpath and lead it as CPO. Here’s what it took to get to live.
~6 months, concept to platform. A cocktail-napkin sketch in November - no deck, not even a slide - to live with real customer data by April 17.
Grounded in research. More than 200 B2B and B2C users shaped the direction before we built.
Two design partners. Together they represent roughly 50 family estates - and we’re still building.
A fractional team of six. I set product direction; with my engineering lead, we made the infrastructure and stack calls together.
Two decisions I own outright. Pathfinder is human-in-the-loop by design - in estate and legal work, a wrong automated action is unrecoverable, so every consequential step stays a deliberate human decision. And the attorney-client privilege and PII workstream now in flight runs entirely at my direction.
The Product
One platform. Six layers. Full lifecycle.
Multi-Estate Hub. The command center across every estate. Lifecycle status, deadlines, and asset health for an entire book of business in a single dashboard.
Estate Document Intelligence. Bulk ingestion that reads, classifies, and extracts from estate paperwork, turning a banker’s box of PDFs into structured, searchable records.
Digital Vault. A secure, organized home for every estate document, with controlled access for families and professionals alike.
Estate Ledger. A three-panel asset register with liability tracking and a ledger summary with beneficiary preview. The professional executor’s operating environment, built to replace an 8-tab spreadsheet.
Envoy Filing Intelligence. Court filing intelligence and submission, with jurisdiction-specific form generation and eCourts handoff.
Pathfinder. A compassionate, jurisdiction-aware AI guide, with contextual intelligence across every stage of the estate lifecycle, for professionals and families alike.
Pathfinder - Guided Intelligence System
One guide. Two systems.
Pathfinder pairs a production AI architecture with an ambient state language: it routes every task to the right model, and it keeps the estate legible at a glance, so you always know what it is doing and why.
AI Architecture
Built on AWS Bedrock
A production stack of Claude and GPT models, automatically routed and scaled per use case so every surface gets the right model for the job - across three roles.
Pathfinder runs multi-step, jurisdiction-aware workflows end to end: file, notify, reconcile, advance.
Understands the estate, its documents, and the statutes that govern it, and answers in plain language.
Drafts court filings, summaries, and next-step guidance from live estate context.
Discoverability & awareness
Communication through state management.
Pathfinder is always available, contextual, transparent, and empathetic. Its status is carried entirely by motion. One engine spins the brand spectrum, and two signals - speed and glow - tell you whether it is resting, working, or needs you. No spinner, no status copy, no chrome.
Not engaged. The drawer is closed and it makes no bid for attention.
The canonical base state. Present but calm, ready for input.
Actively reasoning across the estate. Fastest spin, brightest glow.
A finding needs action. Persists until acknowledged, never auto-dismisses.
Every completeness-gate condition met. Calmer than At Rest, but warmer.
Design system
Built for the work.
The foundation beneath every screen: who it speaks to, how it reads, and the exact tokens - color, type, opacity, spacing - that keep the workspace and the onboarding flow speaking the same language across dark and light.
Brand context
Gen X (45-60). Family executors settling a parent's estate. CPAs managing multiple estates as third-party executors.
Calm competence. Professional but not cold. Guides without patronizing. A trusted advisor's desk, not a government form.
Dark mode for workspace power users (CPAs, returning executors). Light mode for onboarding and first-time B2C users. Both share the same token system.
Typography
Body text, headings, navigation. Variable weight 300-700. Optical size 9-40.
Financial figures, form values, code, metadata labels, status badges, timestamps.
Handwritten script for empathetic encouragement text in onboarding. Used sparingly. Never in workspace UI.
